BECKMAN STAYS THIRD AFTER QUARTERFINAL FINISH IN READING

MOHNTON, Pa. (Oct. 10, 2010) - Jack Beckman held on to third place in the Countdown to the Championship playoffs Funny Car point standings, following his quarterfinal finish at the 26th annual NHRA Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway, just outside of Reading, Pa.

Beckman qualified the Valvoline/Mail Terminal Services Dodge Charger Funny Car in No. 4, then defeated Jeff Arend in the opening round of Sunday's eliminations, with a solid 4.131-second pass at 306.12 mph.

Hoping to make a jump in the point standings after John Force, the leader coming into the event, lost first round, Beckman was set for his match-up against Jim Head in the second round. Beckman took off first at the starting lights, but quickly struck the tires and coasted to a losing 5.645/195.08 lap, while Head claimed the win with a 4.145/301.60.

His Don Schumacher Racing teammate Matt Hagan, second in points, advanced to the second round and took over the points lead after qualifying No. 1 and setting a national record. Beckman hung on to third, and is now 29 markers behind second-place Force, and 93 behind Hagan, who was runner-up today to Cruz Pedregon, with two races remaining in the season.

"That's almost like we had some sort of malfunction," said Beckman. "Our tune-up doesn't do that. And it did it there. It was hard. There's just not a silver lining to this. We're running out of rounds, Matt Hagan's team has absolutely found their stride. We had to keep pace with them here and they've already put five rounds plus a national record between us two.

"It is going to be a tall order the next race. Not impossible. With nitro cars you can make up four rounds a race; they're just so unpredictable. Right now it was a slug in the gut for all of us. So, we have to figure out what caused the problem so it doesn't come up again in the next two races. And we have just have to go out and race the hell out of these next two events."

Next up is the 10th annual NHRA Las Vegas Nationals at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Oct. 29-31.
