Koretsky Sets Track Record; Moves to Ninth in Points
READING, Pa., Oct. 10, 2004 - Ken Koretsky set the Maple Grove Raceway Pro Stock elapsed time record, had the third-fastest speed, jumped from 11th to ninth in NHRA POWERade standings and marched into the Lucas Oil Nationals semifinals Sunday.
In other words, the affable Nitro Fish Wear Dodge driver from nearby Richboro, Pa., had an excellent weekend at his home track before many friends and fans . . . even though he didn't win the race.
"We had a really good weekend," said Koretsky. "We were able to get past Warren Johnson and Rickie Smith in the standings and I was the first-day qualifying leader. We have two races to go, and we definitely want to finish in the top 10."
Koretsky lost a close race to eventual race winner Jason Line in the semifinals. Line left the line first and held off Koretsky's charge - 6.689 seconds at 205.60 mph to 6.679 at 206.39. The difference was Line's .026 starting line reaction time to Koretsky's .045. The winning margin was nine-thousandths of a second.
Koretsky improved his career-best speed mark to 206.39 mph. He also had a run of 206.20 mph, his first in excess of 205 mph.
For the first time in his NHRA career, Koretsky was the first-day qualifying leader, thanks to his track record (at the time) 6.697-second run. He was supplanted Line, who was timed at 6.669 seconds over teammate Greg Anderson's 6.681 in the finals. (6.695).
"It was great to be able to run as well as we did in front of our hometown fans," Koretsky said. "Normally I'm better than that on the (starting line) Christmas tree, but I didn't want to red light. Heck, in this case that was nothing to be ashamed of. Eddie Guarnaccia (crew chief) and the team worked hard all weekend and it showed in our results."
Koretsky used a better starting line advantage to beat Mark Whisnant in the opening round, leaving with a .060 to a .096. The winning time was 6.723 seconds to 6.715.
"I thought Kenny did an excellent job this weekend, and so did our crew," said Guarnaccia. "His light was respectable and he did have the quicker elapsed time. We're looking forward to the last to races of the season. We want to get a win before the season ends."
The AC-Delco Nationals, Las Vegas, Oct. 29-31, are next up, followed by the AAA Finals, Nov. 11-14, at Pomona, Calif.
