Rain Postpones NHRA Race: Johnson Forced To Wait Another Day To Learn His Fate

MOHNTON, PA. 8/19/07 The National Hot Rod Association was forced to postpone the running of the Toyo Tires Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway near Reading, Pa., due to inclement weather this afternoon. A small portion of professional category eliminations were completed before the rain started falling, but that did not include Pro Stock Motorcycle, leaving Snap-on Tools Suzuki rider Steve Johnson of Irondale, Al., with another 18 hours during which he can chew his fingernails to the quick.

Johnson, currently ninth in the points standings, still has an opportunity of making the Countdown to the Championship if he can go two rounds further in eliminations than any one of three different riders.

"Yeah," Johnson admitted as he contemplated the rain from inside his transporter, "I was a little nervous when qualifying started on Friday, but as the weekend went on I actually calmed down.

"I know what I have to do to make the Countdown, but I can't control what the other riders do. All I can do is try my best, and darn it, I'm sorry you asked. Now I'm gonna start getting nervous all over again!"

Johnson, who qualified ninth for the 16-motorcycle field, will face Number 8 qualifier Antron Brown in the first round of eliminations.

"Antron's a helluva racer," Johnson added. "I'm going to have my hands full, but I've got confidence in my crew chief, Mark Peiser, and in my guys. I know they're going to give me a Suzuki capable of winning, so it'll be up to me to get the job done."

Johnson has been invited to appear on Dirt Bike Television for an extensive interview, but may have to forego that opportunity in order to be ready to race when eliminations get underway at 10:00 AM EDT tomorrow morning.

"I'd love to do the TV show," he said, "but our first
priority is obviously the race. That comes first no matter what.

"How many more hours is it until ten o'clock? Man, I can't take much more of this!"
