SCHUMACHER SECOND IN TOP FUEL ORDER

MOHNTON, Pa., October 8, 2010 - U.S. Army Top Fuel driver Tony "The Sarge" Schumacher swiped the second starting spot here Friday during the opening day of qualifying for the Toyo Tires Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway.

The defending world champion recorded a 3.852-second pass at a track record 318.24 mph and thus fell in behind teammate, Cory McClenathan, heading into final qualifying on Saturday.

"That was a good run during the day," said Schumacher. "We were really going for it at night, but it appeared the track got too cold and the tires just wouldn't hold. We'll get back to working on our race day tune up come tomorrow."

At Maple Grove Raceway on Sunday, Schumacher will be looking to cut into Larry Dixon's points lead for the second straight race. Following his win at the Texas Motorplex two weeks ago, he moved to within 94 points of the top spot.

"There's definitely more ground to make up," he said. "We have to go out and take care of our own business and hope we get some help when it comes to taking Larry out early."

Sandwiched in between Dixon and Schumacher in the standings is McClenathan, who arrived in the Keystone State holding a 25-point edge over Schumacher.

"Cory and his team are running strong right now," offered Schumacher. "Obviously, Dixon is not the only guy we have to worry about. Again, we have to focus on what we have to do or else it will all be a moot point."

Schumacher is gunning for his seventh consecutive title and the eighth of his career. With three races remaining on the schedule, time is starting to fade away.

"No doubt about that," he said. "We're in a little hole right now, but we can still dig out for sure. We'll keep swinging the bat to the very end."

Schumacher's U.S. Army Racing teammate, Antron Brown, could do no better than 17th after two rounds of qualifying.

The New Jersey native could not get down the track cleanly in either session and as a result found himself on the outside looking in going into the last two qualifying sessions.
