Press Release

A Straight and Narrow Guy Goes Around the Bend

LAKEVILLE, Conn. (Nov. 8) - NHRA Funny Car driver Al Hofmann is pretty darn good at wielding his 5,500 h.p., 2,225 lb Pontiac Funny Car down 440 yards of asphalt; the 48-year-old Floridian has won 12 National Events, and was the first Funny Car driver to make five consecutive 300+ mph runs.

But beginning Monday Nov. 11, Hofmann will ride a horse of a decidedly different color--a 1,000 lb, 130 h.p. Formula Dodge race car. Hofmann has decided to try the twisty-bits, roadracing thing; he's taking the Skip Barber Racing School Three Day Competition Course at Sebring International Raceway in central Florida.

Why?

"The Cotter people thought it would be a neat thing, some good publicity for my sponsor, but even though Western Auto is now no longer my sponsor, I still want to do this. I know some other drag racers that have done Skip's school [ed. note: Darrell Alderman, Scott Geoffrion, Whit Bazemore and others are Skip Barber grads] and it's going to be a load of fun."

TNN's NHRA Today racing magazine show plans to be at Sebring to shoot Hofmann's left-right exploits, including installing an on-board camera.

Hofmann made four NHRA Funny Car Final Round appearances in 1996, with one National Event win (the Winternationals at Pomona, Calif.).
