SONOMA, Calif. (Aug. 6, 2000) - Team Mopar drivers Darrell Alderman and Dean Skuza each made semifinal round appearances in their respective categories during Sunday's eliminations for the 13th Annual Fram Autolite NHRA Nationals at Sears Point Raceway.

Alderman, driver of the Team Mopar Dodge Avenger Pro Stock machine, fell to the Team Amoco Dodge Avenger of Allen Johnson in the semifinals. Alderman broke loose at the start and watched as Johnson flew through the lights with a 6.993-second elapsed time at 197.16 mph. Alderman shut the car off and coasted to an 11.599/76.36.

"I'm really proud of this team," said Alderman, who has 27 national event wins to his credit. "We had the same problem in the second round, it just shook off the line and I couldn't get it down the track."

Alderman advanced to round two after setting low elapsed time of the first session at 6.913-seconds and a top speed of 199.46 mph. The three-time NHRA Winston Pro Stock World Champion defeated Troy Coughlin, who ran a 6.977/197.97.

Alderman made his way to the semifinals when Ron Krisher turned on a red light at the start. Fortunately for Alderman, Krisher's red light allowed a tire-shaking Alderman to move on after running to a 9.956/112.98.

Jeg Coughlin nipped Dodge Motorsports Avenger driver Larry Morgan at the stripe in round one. Coughlin, the current Pro Stock points leader, held a holeshot advantage at the start and drove to a 6.926/199.35 combination. Morgan clocked a 6.927/199.76.

"I'm really happy with the performance of this new Hemi engine," Morgan said. "I was a little late at the start and it cost us at the other end. We found a lot of positive things this weekend, and I'm excited about the future."

Matco Tools/Mopar Parts Nitro Funny Car pilot Dean Skuza lost to Tony Pedregon in the semifinals. Skuza turned on the red light while Pedregon, despite hitting the wall at the top end, managed a 5.210/226.66.

It was a nice comeback for a team that had just destroyed a body and blower a day earlier.

"All in all, it was a great weekend," Skuza commented. "The guys stayed up until 2:30 am this morning to get this thing right. I hate to disappoint them with a red light, but it happened. I think I could have beaten Tony that round."

A. Johnson lost to Kurt Johnson in the final and John Geyer made it to the second round before falling to A. Johnson in the second round of competition.

Team Mopar will next be in action in two weeks at Brainerd International Raceway for the Colonel's Truck Accessories Nationals.
