SEATTLE; Aug. 1, 1999: Kurt Johnson drove his ACDelco Camaro Z28 into the NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series winner's circle for the third time this season, scoring his 15th Pro Stock title of his career and the fifth for the Camaro since the brand's return to Pro Stock competition in 1998. Kurt defeated Jim Yates in the final round of the Prolong Northwest Nationals at Seattle International Raceway with his 6.923-second pass at 200.44 mph, to Yates' 6.962/198.00. Kurt had the edge in reaction times with his .450 light to Yates' .506, and nosed out Yates' Pontiac by .095 of a second at the finish line. Johnson, of Lawrenceville, Ga., is on a comeback of sorts, after a five-race slump in which he saw his early season points lead disappear. "At last, it's about time," he said. "After Houston in April things were going so well, we went to Virginia and set a record, qualified No. 1 in Chicago, then we didn't qualify in Englishtown. We lost five times in a row (four times in the first round, plus the DNQ). That was the biggest nightmare of my life. I knew it wasn't the car, it was the people working on it. We had to get our act together. I told the guys that putting that Camaro in the lead in the beginning of the year didn't happen with our good looks." The team accomplished its goal and Kurt now sits just 142 points out of the lead. His dad Warren, the points leader, was eliminated in the semifinal by Yates. No. 2 qualifier Kurt defeated Tony Gillig, Allen Johnson and Troy Coughlin as he advanced to the final round from the left lane. He surprised everyone, however, when he opted to run the final round in the right lane. "I never doubt the Safety Safari out there, they always do an excellent job," he commented. "We had been in the left lane all day. I felt real comfortable in the right lane during qualifying, I had no problem. I felt the Camaro was going to go halfway straight, and we made a really good call. The car made an absolute straight run." In the point standings, Kurt holds a comfortable 131-point lead over Jim Yates in third, with nine events remaining on the '99 NHRA schedule. Next up on the schedule is the Autolite Nationals in Sonoma, Calif., this weekend (Aug. 6-8).
WHIT BAZEMORE TAKES '99 CAMARO TO SECOND STRAIGHT FINAL ROUND. Driving the Kendall Oil/Superwinch Camaro Z28 Funny Car, Whit Bazemore advanced to the final round for the second straight event. Whit eliminated Gary Densham, Frank Pedregon and Scotty Cannon to reach the final round, where he lost to Del Worsham. The Kendall Camaro smoked the tires on takeoff, slowing Whit to a 7.302-second pass at 163.67 mph to Worsham's 5.283/279.57.
