Seattle, pre-race: It was here at Seattle International Raceway one year ago where Tony Gillig qualified for the first time in his short NHRA Pro Stock career. Gillig's Oldsmobile Cutlass ran a career best of 6.97 to put him in the #15 spot at the 1999 Prolong Super Lubricants Northwest Nationals. Gillig was beat by Kurt Johnson in the first round as Johnson unloaded a 6.87 to set Low ET and the track record. The situation has changed for Team Gillig since then, and they are ready to do battle out west. Gillig's engine development program with Jon Kaase has gone very well however they feel they are just a tick behind. Bob Gillig, Tony's father and crew chief decided to contact David Reher of Reher and Morrison Racing Engines to rent a motor for the event. Gillig ran a career best 6.903 which qualified him at the Prestone Nationals in Chicago, IL, his home track. Gillig stated, "Reher's motor was very impressive at the Chicago event. We never had a chance to test it prior to the event, we just bolted it in and ran it. We are very pleased with the power and performance of their motor." Gillig will run the Reher and Morrison engine at the Seattle and Sonoma events and then try to figure out a game plan for the remainder of the season. "We are struggling and we feel we just need a bit more power. Things are so close out here that 10-20 Horsepower can make a big difference. We feel we have a great Rick Jones car and RAM Clutch, we just need a little help under the hood." Gillig is anxiously awaiting Friday's qualifying at the 13th annual Prolong Super Lubricants Northwest Nationals presented NAPA Auto Parts event and hopes to have the performance they had in Chicago with the same engine. After sitting out the Bristol, TN and Denver, CO races Tony is dying to get back in the car and let the clutch out.
