KENT, Wash. (July 23, 2004) - Larry Dixon, who raced to the win at Pacific Raceways last July, drove his Miller Lite dragster to the No. 5 qualifying spot Friday at the Washington facility following two of four scheduled qualifying sessions.

After dealing with the high altitude conditions of Bandimere Speedway near Denver last weekend, along with a new Goodyear tire, the race teams again had to adapt, this time to the recently implemented 85-percent nitromethane rule.

On his opening pass of the weekend, the two-time NHRA Top Fuel champion used a Dick LaHaie tune-up to power his Miller-backed dragster to a run of 4.792 seconds at 302.01 mph to grab the No. 2 position. Dixon then piloted his Don Prudhomme-owned dragster to pass of 4.704 at 308.28 to finish fifth on Friday.

"I like everything that we did today," Dixon said. "There were so many variables and so many unknowns the past few weeks. We had to run a new tire last weekend and this week it was the percentage rule and we're on a race track that we've never run before. In spite of all that, I think we did pretty good. We were second quick the first session and fifth quick the second session. I thought we made some good strides and I think we'll try to pick up tomorrow."

Dixon, who qualified No. 1 at Pacific Raceways last year, aims to move up the Top Fuel order when nitro qualifying resumes with sessions at noon and 3:30 p.m. (PT) on Saturday.

ESPN2 will televise two hours of qualifying highlights from the CARQUEST Auto Parts Nationals at 7 p.m. (ET) on Saturday, July 24 and show three hours of final eliminations coverage at 8 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, July 25.
