Dixon seeking first win in Seattle.
SEATTLE (July 22) - With a lead of 119 points in the NHRA POWERade Top Fuel title chase, Miller Lite / Snake Racing driver, Larry Dixon is hoping to break new ground this weekend. He is looking to reach the one place he's never been to as a child, a crew member or now as a driver in all his years of coming to Pacific Raceway - the winner's circle.
It's hard to be anything but awestruck when you look at the performance he's had this year. As the winner of seven National events in 2002, Dixon enters Sunday's 15th annual Lucas Oil Northwest Nationals, the second segment of the 'Western Swing', with the one thought of padding his lead and re-igniting the momentum that has elevated him to 10 final round appearances in the first 13 races.
"Doing well during these three races is very important," said Dixon, the second quarter Driver of the Year award winner. "Scoring points and bringing momentum towards your team is key. It's kind of like a mini-triathlon. If you look back over the years, the team that scores the most points during this swing usually is able to carry that momentum through the rest of the season.
"We've won races, but we have yet to win a championship. The team that has the most desire and comes up with the best package still needs good direction. Look at the LA Lakers. They had a lot of talent for several years with Shaq and Kobe, but they didn't have the proper direction. It took a guy like Phil Jackson to guide them and show that they had the talent and capability to do it. Now they have won three straight titles. I think that is what Dick LaHaie (crew chief) has done. He's brought confidence to our team, my driving and myself. It takes someone like him to make it happen. It's a lot of hard work and everyone on the team has be hitting it."
Dixon has reached the semi-finals three times ('97, '00,'01) at the Pacific Raceway and wants to see that series shine in a different light this year. "I remember the first year at the Seattle race when I first started working for Prudhomme in 1988. We set the National ET Funny Car record at 5.30 seconds. That was very special and probably my biggest highlight there so far. I haven't been in the winner's circle in Seattle, yet, but it seems we've gone to the semi's enough times that I feel that it's only a matter of time before we get our opportunity to get there ourselves."
