KENT, WA (JULY 26) - NHRA Defending Champ Larry Dixon qualified No. 1 for the second week in a row headed into tomorrow's final round action at the CARQUEST Auto Parts Nationals at Pacific Raceways. During the third and final qualifying session Dixon outran Doug Kalitta with a time of 4.676 and speed of 317.27 miles per hour.

On the second qualifying pass the Don Prudhomme owned dragster smoked the tires and gave one up to the Mac Tools dragster driven by Doug Kalitta. Dixon posted a 5.516 E.T. (169.47 mph) to Kalitta's 4.710 E.T. at 304.87 mph.

The third and final pass secured Dixon the No.1 position headed into tomorrow's final eliminations. The Lucas Oil/Miller Lite dragster paired against Kalitta for the third time, but once again it was Dixon with the win. Kalitta smoked the tires and posted a 5.210 E.T. (195.05 mph) while Dixon improved with a 4.676 E.T. and speed of 317.27 mph.

"It spun the tires really hard yesterday, almost to the point where I nearly shut it off, as it turns out, I'm glad I didn't," said Dixon. Crew chief Dick LaHaie made the necessary adjustments, and by the third qualifying pass the Mac Tools/ Miller Lite dragster was back in the groove. "It didn't spin the tires that much going down the track that time, better speed, better routine," said Dixon of the third pass.

The No. 1 qualifier award marks Dixon's third of the season and 23rd of his career. Dixon and the Miller Lite crew earned the No.1 qualifier award earlier this year in Topeka, Kansas and again this past weekend in Denver, Colorado. Dixon went on to win both races, and tomorrow hopes will be no different; allowing him a career first win in Seattle.

Dixon holds a career record of 1-0 against No.16 qualifier Mike Strasburg, who he will pair against in round one of Sunday final eliminations.

Due to challenging track conditions, Dixon was pleasantly surprised by his 4.676 E.T. When asked what it will take to win tomorrow, Dixon replied, "If you ran a 4.67 you'd probably win the race. I just want to see four win lights. If I ran a 5.67 and saw four win lights, I'd be stoked."

ESPN2 will air final round coverage of the CARQUEST Auto Parts Nationals tomorrow from 4-6:00 PM and 8:30-10:00 PM.
