DIXON QUALIFIES MILLER LITE RAIL 10TH AT SEATTLE
KENT, Wash. (July 22, 2006) Two-time NHRA Top Fuel champion Larry Dixon powered his Miller Lite dragster to an elapsed time of 4.663 seconds Saturday at Pacific Raceways to claim the No. 10 qualifying position at the 19th annual Schuck's Auto Supply Nationals.
The 38-time NHRA winner used the second quickest run of Friday's opening qualifying sessions, 4.720-seconds, to record the eighth quickest pass of the first day of qualifying. On Saturday's first attempt under a cloud-covered Pacific Raceways, Dixon upped his mark by powering the Miller Lite/Lucas Oil dragster to a pass of 4.677 seconds at 320.13 mph to place the 1995 NHRA Rookie of the Year 10th in the 16-car order. Dixon saved his best for last as the veteran Top Fuel driver carded his quickest run of qualifying on his fourth and final effort by clocking a performance of 4.663 seconds at 321.04 mph on a hot Pacific Raceways quarter mile. It was the third quickest pass of the final session.
"We stayed after the St. Louis race and tested and worked really hard to improve our hot weather tune-up," crew chief Don Bender said. "It helped at Denver, even with the high altitude, and it's helped us here in the hot weather this weekend at Seattle. We were able to get down the track on three of our four runs. We're still working to have solid hot and cool weather tune-ups and to know how to better adapt to the changes."
Dixon will battle longtime rival Doug Kalitta in the opening round of Top Fuel eliminations on Sunday morning at Pacific Raceways. The first round begins at 11 a.m. (PT). Dixon has met Kalitta more than any other Top Fuel racer in eliminations during his 12-year driving career and holds a narrow 22-20 edge over the Michigan racer.
