CHEVROLET NOTES AND QUOTES PROLONG SUPER LUBRICANTS NORTHWEST NATIONALS NHRA WINSTON DRAG RACING SERIES SEATTLE INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY SUNDAY, AUGUST 2, 1998

FUNNY CAR -- CAMARO Z28 -- FIRST ROUND ELIMINATIONS

WHIT BAZEMORE, TEAM WINSTON CAMARO Z28, was eliminated in the first round by Del Worsham, 7.532/112.05 for Whit, 5.180 for Del. Whit experienced a wild ride in this run.

BAZEMORE: "The Camaro left really well, and it had the front end up, it kind of went over to the right with the front end up and then it spun the tires and when I pedaled it it went across to the left and had the front end up again, and smoked the tires again. By that time it was pretty much all over, it got a little close to the wall. It was just a very disappointing weekend. We have been very competitive in the last five races and had done very well. We didn't really get down the track one time (this weekend), we had a few little mechanical tune-up-related question marks and we solved those. I think we're one run away from having a good run. If we had one more run right now I feel more confident we can go out there and run an .0. But we didn't, so we're going home. We will go to Brainerd and look forward."

"It's a little frustrating because we are working really hard to attract new corporate sponsorship for the next season and to attract the attention of other car owners, everyone on the team is. The qualifying effort showed our abilities that when we struggle we can still carry the car and make things happen. Everyone on this team has a never-say-die attitude. I know there are people out here who are going to find that attractive and want to be involved with us."

ON THE POINTS CHASE: "(Chuck) Etchells going out in first round helps us in the points, (Tom) Wilkerson not qualifying helps us in the points. We are not that far back from where we were last year when we were second. We had a good opportunity to make a big dent in the points today and we didn't capitalize on it. The points are so tight, there's going to be more opportunities and we have to take advantage of them. We're in the second half of the season, so this is our one mistake that we're allowed to make. After that we have to be perfect, otherwise it's over. We are just going to be aggressive and come what may."

CHUCK ETCHELLS, KENDALL/MA MA ROSA'S PIZZA/SUPERWINCH CAMARO Z28, also was defeated in the first round by red-lighting against Chuck Beal. He drops to third in points.

ETCHELLS: "I didn't even know I had red-lighted. I got out of the car at the other end happy with the run, then the T.V. crew came over and told me. I couldn't believe it, because I don't think I've red-lighted since around 1989, it's been many, many years. Nothing was out of the ordinary, I had no problems staging, I looked at the second amber bulb on the tree, because it was the darkest of the three and easiest to see, and when I saw it come on, I went. That's why I didn't lift. If I had known it was a red-light start, I would have shut it off. I'll tell you one thing, the Camaro was absolutely pefect. The way it ran in the first round, we could have won this race today. Unfortunately, as it turns out, we'll leave here in third place. But, we'll put today behind us and head to Brainerd and get after them there."

PRO STOCK -- CAMARO Z28

LARRY MORGAN, RAYBESTOS CAMARO Z28, had to face the only other Camaro Z28 in the Pro Stock field, KURT JOHNSON, in the AC DELCO CAMARO Z28. One of the Camaros had to go; and it was Morgan losing to Johnson, 6.942/199.46 for Kurt, 7.000/197.84 for Morgan.

MORGAN: "Kurt ought to win the race, he almost ran a .93. Hopefully he can win the race, since I couldn't do it for Chevrolet. I blew the tires off on it. That lane (right) wasn't really good for us. I feel good we got down it. At least we know we can get down now, so I think we're o.k. We just need a little more luck in qualifying. If we qualify well we will be in a good position to win. It's hard when you qualify in the last session and the car doesn't work right, but I think we will be all right for Brainerd, I feel good going into it."
