CAPPS HANGS IN AT NO. 15 IN TOUGH GO IN SEATTLE QUALIFYING

KENT, Wash. (July 19, 2008) - Ron Capps had a tough go during Funny Car qualifying for the NHRA Nationals at Pacific Raceways, finally collecting the No. 15 spot with a 4.135-second pass at 299.53 mph today.

Driving the NAPA AUTO PARTS Dodge Charger R/T and racing to the 1000-ft. finish line for the second straight event, Capps posted two slow tire-smoking laps on Friday of 7.970/79.00 and 12.963/59.07, which kept him out of the top 12 following the first day of qualifying.

The NAPA AUTO PARTS team wasn't able to take advantage of Friday's cloud cover to establish a good lap, and Saturday's two qualifying passes were run under a warm Northwestern sun. Although he improved today by recording his quickest pass in the third session of the weekend, his final attempt resulted in a 5.940/112.75 pass. Capps hung on to No. 15, while 14-time NHRA Funny Car champion John Force was the only driver in the 17-car field who failed to qualify.

"I had talked about all the stuff that we were trying in Denver," Capps said of last weekend's race at the mile-high Bandimere Speedway. "You have to try new things in order to figure out ways to run quicker. We know what we can run with what we have and so we felt like Denver was a good place to try some new things. And, by trying the Don Schumacher Racing in-house-built parts, we're aiming to get ahead of the game a little bit. We left those parts in for Friday and we didn't get down the track, so Ace (crew chief Ed McCulloch) had to go back his normal tune-up. But we're looking to put those parts back in.

"It's important to us to find a way to run better." added Capps. "So, today, the first run at 4.13 was a pretty good run in my book because we hadn't gotten down the track at all. A lot of the other Funny Car guys had been down the track on Friday, so that was a great run, and it stayed in.

"It's just been a strange weekend. This happens every year. You come off the mountain in Denver and you come down to these conditions in Seattle and it throws a lot of guys curves. It's nice to know that we can always put our normal tune-up in the NAPA AUTO PARTS Dodge and go down the track.

"It's going to be tough, no matter what. And the NAPA guys are so upbeat. They reminded me that we won Englishtown a few years back from the 15th position. So, we're looking to keep everybody's spirits up and show up Sunday morning and try to win the race."

Capps faces Del Worsham in the opening round of Sunday's eliminations.
