Capps, Johnson fall in first round at Northwest Nationals.
KENT, Wash., July 28, 2002 - Ron Capps and Tommy Johnson Jr. finished in the first round of the rain-delayed Lucas Oil Northwest Nationals Sunday at Pacific Raceways, near Seattle.
The engine in Capps' Green Skoal Racing Camaro dropped a cylinder against Dale Creasy Jr. and slowed him to a 5.094 at 289.94 while Creasy won with a 4.993 at 303.03 mph.
Johnson's Blue Skoal Racing Camaro suffered severe tire shake and he lost to Del Worsham for the second consecutive NHRA POWERade Series race - 5.028 at 311.13 to 7.719 at 105.27.
Capps had qualified eighth, running 4.991 seconds at 299.13 mph and Johnson 10th, 5.028 at 287.05.
"When the cylinder went out it pushed the car to the right toward the centerline," said Capps. "The car was running good until then. When the cylinder goes out, that takes away 800 horsepower. I had the wheel cranked all the way to the left because I didn't want to lift, but then he came by me."
"My car shook," Johnson commented. "It was one of the most violent tire-shakes of my career. I tried to pedal it once but there was no saving it."
Intermittent rain continued all day, forcing NHRA officials to postpone the completion of the race until Monday.
The final race of this three-event Western swing concludes with the Fram/Autolite Nationals, Friday through Sunday, at Infineon Raceway, formerly known as Sears Point, Sonoma, Calif.
Qualifying: Capps, No. 8, 4.991 seconds at 299.13 mph; Johnson, No. 10, 5.028 seconds at 287.05 mph
First round: Del Worsham def. Johnson; Dale Creasy Jr. def. Capps
Pro Winners: Race to be completed Monday.
