Amato, Worsham, and Kurt Johnson Win Northwest Nationals

KENT WA - SUMMIT FastNews - It's been a long time for Del Worsham but he returned to the NHRA winners circle by defeating Whit Bazemore in the final round of the Prolong Super Lubricants Northwest Nationals, Presented by Al's Automotive. Worsham claimed his first win in nine years when Bazemore began smoking the tires right at the start of the race. Worsham ran 5.283/279.67 to Bazemore's trailing 7.302/163.67. Worsham started his march to the finals by defeating Dale Creasy Jr in the first round. Round two saw Worsham defeat a tire smoking Al Hofmann. John Force fell victim in the semi-final when he failed to get a grip on the tricky Seattle International Raceway surface. In Top Fuel Joe Amato has now won back to back Northwest National event titles. Amato defeated Doug Kalitta in the final round on a holeshot. The numbers showed a very close finish with Amato running a slightly slower 4.704/306.95 to Kalitta's 4.697/307.58 run. The win, in the thirteenth round of the NHRA's twenty two event series, leaves Amato in third place in the point standing. He is only four points behind Kenny Bernstein, who is in second place and twenty six behind point leader Mike Dunn. Pro Stock saw Jim Yates chasing the Winston 'No Bull' 50k prize money all day. In the end Kurt Johnson was just a little to quick, taking the win over Yates in the final round. Johnson had made the quickest run of the weekend earlier in round one of eliminations when he defeated Tony Gillig, running 6.876/200.95 mph. In round two KJ eliminated the Dodge Avenger of Allen Johnson. In the semi-final round Johnson disposed of Troy Coughlin to secure his spot in the finals. In Federal-Mogul Dragster, Melanie Troxel, from Littleton Colorado, defeated defending National Champion Rick Santos. Troxel secured the win as Santos got the backend of his dragster very closer to the concrete wall. It appeared that Santos got loose as the oil from a failing engine got on his tires. Troxel still would have made his job very tough as she was the number one qualifier and ran a very quick 5.550/252.57 in her nitromethane fueled dragster.

Local favorite, Pat Austin, was the winner in Federal-Mogul Funny Car. Austin defeated Larry Miner in the final, running 5.700/250.88 to Miner's 5.740/250.09. Austin also took his win after starting as the class number one qualifier. Other winners in the NHRA sportsman classes included Andy Manna Jr, Jimmy De Frank, Toby Lang, Frank Kohutek, Joe Mura and Fred Hoffman.
