Howard just misses win in Houston.
BAYTOWN, Texas - For the second week in a row, NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster driver Shelly Howard came up one round short of winning during this past weekend's Division 4 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Houston Raceway Park. Howard, who qualified No. 1, was ahead of her opponent Nick Copeland, but got out of shape and was forced to lift, allowing Copeland to drive by for the win.
Howard, from Tulsa, Okla., qualified her Tom Conway tuned Blown Alcohol Dragster No. 1 with a 5.560 second elapsed time at 254.76 mph. In round one, she took out Mike Bowers with a 5.588 at 256.99 mph, and then took out Lee Callaway with a 5.570 at 255.92 mph. In the final, Howard held the lead over Copeland to the 1000' mark until she had to lift, giving Copeland the win.
"We are pretty disappointed with what happened in the final," said Howard. "The car just went crazy when I put it into high gear. I tried to make it to the finish line, but the car was just getting out of control, so I had to lift. I can't say enough about how hard my tuner Tom Conway and my crew of Mark Gardener, my husband Paul, Joe Monden, Rick Meyer and Mike Bowler have worked to get this car back competitive. We're still not where we want to be performance wise just yet, but we are leaps and bounds ahead of where we were earlier in the year. Compared to some of our earlier races, this was definitely a good weekend."
The next event for the Howard Racing Team will be the resumption of the rained out Joliet, Ill., Division 3 LODRS event, Jul. 19-21. There Howard hopes the team can continue their forward progress.
"Joliet is typically a pretty good track," stated Howard. "It should be pretty hot, so we will probably see some of the same conditions we raced in this past weekend. We will just try to do our best as always."
