BRAINERD, Minn. - NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster driver Shelly Howard had her weekend at this past weekend's Lucas Oil Nationals in Brainerd, Minn., end early after a brush with the wall in the final qualifying session. While no major damage was accrued, there was enough damage to sideline Howard for the remainder of the event.
Howard, from Tulsa, Okla., was on the final qualifying pass Saturday morning and launched into severe tireshake. During the tireshake, the car made a violent move right. As Howard lifted and tried to get it back away from the wall, the right-rear slick impacted the guard wall. The front part of the chassis was bent as a result, despite it not hitting the wall.
"We had a problem with tireshake all weekend," said Howard. "I tried to cut it back, but the right-rear hit the wall before I could get it back. I drove it off the track, so we were thinking we might have gotten away with no damage, but after careful inspection, we realized the front of the car was bent. So that pretty much ended our weekend."
Howard and her team don't plan to miss a beat, however, as they still plan to attend their next race, the biggest in all of drag racing, the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals.
"One of our crewmembers, Joe Monden, is also a chassis builder," stated Howard. "He lives relatively close to us in Gainesville, Texas, and is going to front half the car for us. The car is serviced and ready for Indy, and I should be able to pick it up next week in time to go to Indy."
