SONOMA, Calif. - Veteran Top Alcohol Funny Car pilot Dennis Taylor and his Cooner Wire team will be looking to turn up the heat at this weekend's NHRA Division 7 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif. Taylor and team crew chief Randy Goodwin feel they are starting to get a handle on running in the hot conditions they will encounter this weekend.

Taylor, who runs his racing safety equipment company, Taylor Motorsports Products, in Anaheim, Calif., feels the team's hot weather tune-up is coming around. The team qualified No. 1 at the last Division 7 race in Bakersfield, Calif., and ran strong numbers at a recent match race in Phoenix.

"We've always been able to run on the good tracks," said Taylor. "But when the weather gets hot and we start to see slick conditions, we don't do as well. Between bringing Randy on this year and experimenting with a few things, I finally think we have a good starting point for a hot weather tune-up. It was hot in Bakersfield and we ran well there. Then at the match race we ran in Phoenix, the track temp was 130 degrees, and they hadn't even prepped the track, and we still were able to run a 5.94. We used Phoenix as a test session, and it was very positive. Sonoma being a national event track, we should be able to take what we had in Bakersfield and get after it a bit more. The whole team is ready to go."

"Changing over to the new Mickey Thompson tire has been a big help as well," Taylor continued. "We showed they could run in good conditions earlier in the year, and with our recent outings, it shows they work very well in the heat as well."

Taylor is also looking forward to contributing to the Larry Winter Benefit Barbecue this weekend. Winter is a Division 7 Super Eliminator racer who was injured in an accident earlier in the year.

"Our thoughts and prayers are still with Larry," commented Taylor. "Hopefully this barbecue will help out his family, and hopefully we'll see him back at the track soon."

Qualifying starts on Friday, and will continue on Saturday with two more sessions. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday. Stay tuned to InsideTopAlcohol.com for the latest news in alcohol racing.
