TASCA CURRENTLY NOT QUALIFIED AT INFINEON
Rookie driver has two runs on Saturday to make field
SONOMA, Calif. (July 25, 2008) -- Bob Tasca III is one of five drivers in the nitro Funny Car class looking to secure one of the last four positions for Sunday's NHRA Nationals at Infineon Raceway.
The rookie driver made a decent run down the California track early in the day, but smoking the tires during his second run, put the driver of the Motorcraft/Quick Lane/Custom Accessories outside of the currently 12 qualified drivers.
"We just went for it," said Tasca of his night run at Infineon Raceway. "You've got a few opportunities when the conditions are really, really good to make a run at it, and that's that we did. There were pretty stout conditions out there, and we threw it at it. You can't run a 4.09 [ET] trying to run a 4.20.
"We really, really, really wanted to make a good run tonight," said Tasca. "That was Chris' [Cunningham, crew chief] desire, as it was for all of us. But at the end of the day, you're dealing with fractions of a second, and tough decisions as to what to do to the car. A gram here, a couple of degrees there, even a quarter-pound in the tire all play a critical role in the car making it down the track or not. For us, we were just a little bit off and it caused the car to smoke the tires."
Tasca will have two runs on Saturday to earn a spot in Sunday's 16-car field. With 17 drivers entered in this weekend's event, Tasca needs to only run quicker than one of the four other competitors not currently qualified for the race, to make his 14th career start on Sunday.
"I've got all the confidence in the world with this racecar," said Tasca. "We actually have some great data for tomorrow. We were third quickest to just before half-track in the early session in the heat. We'll take that data from this morning and we'll adjust it for tomorrow. Like anything else, you're going to have to run good tomorrow to run good on Sunday, we've got all expectations that we'll do that."
