Sarver takes White Cap Celica home to Sonoma.
SONOMA, Calif. (Aug. 1, 2002) - Veteran drag racer Bruce Sarver will take the White Cap Toyota Celica Funny Car to his home track of Infineon Raceway at Sears Point with the hope of claiming his first Funny Car victory this season. He will be performing in front of friends and family this weekend at the 15th annual Fram-Autolite NHRA Nationals, Aug. 2-4.
"The White Cap Toyota Celica is getting better and better every race," commented Sarver, who is from Bakersfield, Calif. "I think we're due for a big weekend...I already love this track, but I'd love it even more if we can earn our first win of the season there."
Since taking over behind the wheel of the White Cap Celica Funny Car at Englishtown, N.J., in May, Sarver has been one of the hottest drivers in the NHRA POWERade Funny Car class. He has three final-round appearances (Englishtown, Columbus and Seattle) and two top qualifying positions (Topeka and Chicago). Sarver, who has qualified fourth or better in five of the last six races, has earned 447 points to date, fourth most in the Funny Car class since he began seven races ago. He is currently 14th overall in the Funny Car standings despite racing in just half the events.
In addition to Sarver's accomplishments, the White Cap Toyota Celica Funny Car produced three top-10 qualifying positions and another earlier final-round appearance in Gainesville, Fla., with Gary Scelzi behind the wheel. The two drivers have combined to earn 748 points in the White Cap Celica, sixth most in the Funny Car class.
The White Cap Toyota Celica is the first manufacturer-backed import Funny Car in NHRA POWERade Series. The car, which made its debut in February in Pomona, Calif., was developed using the production Celica GT-S as the baseline. The project, which began in the fall of 2001, was developed in conjunction with Swift Engineering, Inc., in San Clemente, Calif.
