MCCLENATHAN JUMPS TO NO. 4 IN SONOMA QUALIFYING

SONOMA, Calif. (July 17, 2010) - With only three Top Fuel qualifying sessions held this weekend at the FRAM-Autolite NHRA Nationals at Infineon Raceway because of a 10 p.m. curfew Friday night, Cory McClenathan jumped from No. 13 into No. 4 with his solid round-best 3.896-second pass at 309.06 mph in today's second round of qualifying in the heat of the day.

His first lap on Friday produced a tire-smoking 6.338/91.85 and in today's final pass of the weekend the driver of the FRAM Top Fuel Dragster posted a tire-shaking 4.241/200.35.

"We're pretty good," said McClenathan, winner last Sunday in Seattle and the only Top Fuel driver with a chance to sweep the Western Swing (Seattle, Sonoma, Denver). "We had a good car in the heat. Something went wrong in that last pass, but I think we still would have run pretty well. We had a good 60-foot increment. I think we have a pretty good car for the heat, so I'm not too concerned about it.

"We have Bob Vandergriff first round. We have to be concerned about everybody out there, but we need to race our race track. This is obviously the FRAM-Autolite Nationals, so it's a big deal for us to do well here tomorrow."

As for losing the opportunity to run under stellar conditions Friday night, after the event was delayed because of numerous oil downs, "We've had that happen here a few times," he said. "That's just the way it is. We can't forecast oil downs so what do you do? The fans lose out. NHRA made the right call by not starting the round and that was the smart thing to do, so NHRA did their job. But maybe we should have started the whole thing a little earlier to make sure we got it in.

"Everybody lost that round, it wasn't just us. So, we're playing under the same rules, but we'd love to have had four qualifying rounds, that's for sure.

"I think we could've run well enough to have been on the pole. That's the biggest thing that's going to affect us tomorrow ladder-wise."
