Doug Kalitta and the Mac Tools team make second-round showing in Sonoma
SONOMA, Calif., (July 29, 2007) -- Doug Kalitta, driver of the Mac Tools Top Fuel dragster, narrowly missed a chance to win his sixth "Wally" at Infineon Raceway Sunday during final eliminations at the Fram Autolite NHRA Nationals in Sonoma, Calif.
In the first round of eliminations, Kalitta, a five-time Top Fuel winner in Sonoma and the No. 6 qualifier, raced No. 11 qualifier Clay Millican. The two Top Fuel veterans both had their hands full as both race cars started losing traction and smoking the tires before the half-track markers. Both drivers struggled to get their nitro-fueled mounts to "hook up" again, but Kalitta's fast footwork won out as he went on to get the win, 5.242 seconds, 293.92 mph to 7.400 sec., 111.02 mph.
Kalitta then faced Rod Fuller in the quarterfinals. Kalitta left the starting line first (.075 seconds to .090 sec.) and looked to be making a charge into the semifinals, but Kalitta's "Big Red" dragster started barely spinning the rear tires near the finish line and Fuller was able to get by him for the close win, 4.654 sec., 320.43 mph to 4.600 sec., 325.53 mph.
"We really like racing in Sonoma, but today just wasn't our day," Kalitta, a 42-year old resident of Ann Arbor, Mich., said. "My Mac Tools guys did a great job all weekend giving me a good race car. I wish I could have put the Mac Tools car in the winner's circle for them. Our car just keeps getting better and better each week. We have nothing to put our heads down about."
When asked about his chances of making the Countdown to the Championship, Kalitta confidently stated, "We can make it. No, we're going to make it."
This season the NHRA instituted the new Countdown to the Championship points system. Only the top eight in POWERade points after the first 17 national events will be allowed to vie for the season championship. This weekend's event was the 15th of the season.
Kalitta is now 11th in POWERade championship points. He is 64 points shy of 8th place.
