Densham glad to be back in home state

SONOMA, Calif. (July 26) - As a grueling six weeks back-to-back tour across the United States comes to a close, Funny Car driver Gary Densham is one racer who is happy to be back in his home state of California.

"I've been drag racing a long time, longer than some of my competitors have been on this earth," Densham said. "I'm used to being on the road all the time so it's really not that big of a deal to me, but it's nice to see familiar faces and the same state licence plates as your own for a change."

Densham is hoping to impress family, friends and fans this weekend at the 20th FRAM Autolite NHRA Nationals at Infineon Raceway in the Sonoma Valley. The Torco Racing Fuels/Racebricks Collectibles driver will be vying for one of 16 spots in Sunday's eliminations beginning with two days of qualifying Friday.

"This is another one of those beautiful facilities in Bruton Smith's collection of tracks, Densham said. "And you couldn't have better scenery than the wine country of northern California. Now all we have to do is show everybody what we're capable of doing on the track and we'll be ready to open a bottle of that great champaign they produce up here.

"The guys were a little down after the Seattle race and so was I, but this is a different week and we're going to show everyone how we're able to bounce back. Even if it's hot and windy, like it usually is up here, we can handle it.

Densham qualified 12th last weekend but due to a rain-shortened event, was knocked out of eliminations when the top-ten rule was instituted, ensuring that the season point leaders were in the 16-car field.

"We've been snake-bitten so far this year," Densham said. "It would really be nice to say we turned things around in my home state."
