GOODYEAR-SHOD CARS WIN EIGHT TIMES IN NHRA RACE AT SONOMA
SONOMA, Calif. (July 30, 2006) -- Drivers racing on Goodyear tires had a clear advantage during the Fram Autolite NHRA Nationals for the POWERade Drag Racing Series at Infineon Raceway.
Eight of the 10 category winners raced on Goodyear Eagle Dragway Specials and Goodyear tires were on at least one car in nine of the 10 final rounds. For the season, Goodyear has collected 82 wins in NHRA national competition, more than all other tiremakers combined.
The Goodyear-shod winners included J.R. Todd (Top Fuel), Eric Medlen (Funny Car), Jason Line (Pro Stock), Glen Treadwell (Competition Eliminator), Mike Blodgett (Super Gas), Brad Rounds (Super Stock), Clint Thompson (Top Alcohol Funny Car) and Morgan Lucas (Top Alcohol Dragster).
Thompson, asked what the victory total meant, said, "It says Goodyear makes the best racing tires. No question about that."
The Goodyear-equipped cars didn't just win, they set records. Five track or national records fell in the POWERade professional categories.
Greg Anderson set a national record for top speed in Pro Stock (207.82 mph) and set a track elapsed time record (6.631 seconds). Robert Hight set an elapsed time record in Funny Car (4.738 seconds). Tony Schumacher set a track record for elapsed time in Top Fuel (4.486 seconds) and David Grubnic set a new mark for speed (331.36 mph).
Todd, the rookie sensation who won for the second time, beat Schumacher in the Top Fuel final. Doug Kalitta held on to the lead of the championship standings.
Medlen, who drives for John Force, said he went calf roping in the days before the event. "Before we started qualifying, I was so sore that I didn't know if I could step on the gas pedal," Medlen said.
Ron Capps still leads the race for the Funny Car title, but Force edged closer and now trails by just 60 points.
Line's victory was his third of the season and it gave him the championship lead.
Goodyear's performance in the Lucas Oil Sportsman categories was impressive. In the six sportsman categories, Goodyear tires were on 10 of the 12 cars that reached the final round and 17 of the 24 cars to reach the semi-final round.
In the Super Stock final, which was won by Rounds, runner-up Frank Grossi competed on Goodyear's D6894 radial rear drive tire. The 33-inch tire was recently added to Goodyear's drag racing line.
