Anderson Battles Conditions to Place Fourth on Friday in Sonoma

The first day of qualifying for the Fram Autolite NHRA Nationals featured two sessions held in completely different atmospheric conditions, due to numerous delays and the ever-changing weather in the Napa Valley. After dealing with sunny skies, 80 degree temperatures and a corrected altitude of 2,227 feet in the opening stanza at Infineon Raceway, the "factory hot rods" were greeted by nearly ideal conditions for their second attempt on Friday evening, with ambient temperatures that were 15 degrees cooler, resulting in a corrected altitude of only 1,114 feet. This dramatic swing saw elapsed times plummet, putting extra pressure on the crews to make the most of the opportunity.

After opening with the sixth-quickest time at 6.631-seconds, Summit Racing Pro Stock driver Greg Anderson was among those making a significant improvement in the night session, powering through the quarter-mile in 6.570-seconds with a top speed of 209.72 mph, placing him fourth midway through the qualifying procedure. Although fairly pleased with his initial showing, the three-time Sonoma winner revealed that the results could have even been better.

"Our Summit Racing Pontiac made a decent run tonight, but it could have been better, because we rolled the lights and cost us some time," said Anderson. "Conditions were changing by the minute, with temperatures dropping like a rock, so we added a lot of clutch to it, but should have put a little more air gap as well. I also should have concentrated a little more on holding the pedal in, because it all added up to our giving up about hundredth in the first sixty feet. Looking at the graph, we should have been able to run a 6.55 or 6.56, but we still did all right, ending up fourth with that 6.57.

"Fortunately, it's an easy fix, so we were still pretty pleased with our performance. However, we need to work on Jason's (teammate Line, who ended the day 12th in the standings) car. That's our goal for tomorrow -- to get that car right, and I have all the confidence in the world that we will. We have a good set-up for both these cars right now and just made a mistake tonight that we will fix tomorrow."
