Dixon sizzles to no. 1 in Sonoma: Miller Lite driver takes his seventh pole position of 2002

SONOMA, CA (Aug. 3) - Taking full advantage of overcast skies and cool wine country conditions, Larry Dixon made it 'Miller Time' at Infineon Raceway driving to his seventh No. 1 qualifying position of the 2002 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing series at the 15th annual Fram-Autolite Nationals.

Dixon, piloting the Miller Lite / Snake Racing Dick LaHaie-tuned dragster grabbed the pole position covering the quarter-mile distance in a time of 4.608 seconds along with a speed of 317.94 mph, giving him his 19th No. 1 low E.T. qualifier of his career and first since May 25 at Heartland Park Topeka.

"You just have to race," said Dixon, a seven-time Top Fuel winner this year. "You're either gaining or losing but the only time I really want to be the point's leader is the day after Pomona. Right now I'm just trying to win rounds and win races from here on out."

"The points will take care of themselves. I'm cautiously optimistic about tomorrow. It's been a great race so far. I'm really enjoying being back on the West Coast."

This marks Dixon first No. 1 qualifier at Infineon Raceway spanning over eight events surpassing his previous highest qualifying position of No. 3 in the 2001 edition.

"This track is unreal," said Dixon. "It's night and day from what it was. Now it's up to NHRA standards. I mean, how can I complain? We had four smoke-free runs this weekend, so I'm happy." NHRA POWERade Top Fuel points leader Dixon, who has earned 1,262 points after completing 14 events enters Sunday's race with now a 98-point advantage over rival Kenny Bernstein, gaining 1-point after taking the top position.

Dixon will face Ken Zeal in the first round of eliminations for the first time of his career out of the 59 drivers he has faced overall in NHRA National event competition. Should he reach the final round in Sunday's race, it will signify Dixon's 400th round of competition. ESPN2 will air a three-program highlighting the Fram-Autolite Nationals starting at 7 p.m. EDT.
