Morgan takes third in Sonoma qualifying; moves into fourth in Pro

SONOMA, Calif. (July 31, 2004) - Larry Morgan appears to be gaining on dominating Pro Stock points leader Greg Anderson and today's third qualifying session demonstrated Morgan's and the Team Mopar Dodge'S progress, when he posted a 6.722-second elapsed time at 205.10 mph. That placed him at the time in the No. 1 spot, until Anderson and his teammate Jason Line edged out Morgan for No. 1 and No. 2 with a 6.693/206.01 and a 6.719/205.54 pass.

"We made a real good run this morning," he said. "Actually, the track came to us because we didn't change a lot."

The final session proved to be less productive, as Morgan's 6.763/203.03 was not what was expected. "We have a clutch in there that's given us all kinds of fits," he said. "I'm going to suggest that Glidden take it clear out and throw it away.

"We just have too much clutch in the car and it will not run. And this morning when the conditions were good, we went out and ran well. This afternoon since the adjusted altitude was 500-600-ft. higher we didn't change the clutch much and it just showed once again it has too much clutch. And we have to fix it.

"We'll be all right tomorrow. And I need to win another race. That's what I'm here for," he added.

With the resources made available to the Newark, Ohio, resident as the newest member of the Don Schumacher Racing family, Morgan is confident he and his crew chief Bob Glidden will continue to improve and beat Greg Anderson again in a final round.

Morgan has experience in beating Anderson. He accomplished that feat right here in the final round at Infineon Raceway in 2002, which was also Morgan's last win. Morgan earned a $30,000 bonus for collecting the Motel 6 'Who Got the Light' award for posting the smallest margin of victory during the season

"I beat Jeggie (Jeg Coughlin Jr.) in the semifinals and Greg in the finals here. It was probably one of my better races, because we not only won the race, but it was the closest race all year. The margin of victory was two ten thousandths of a second.

"So it was a big deal for us. It was exciting to beat him. because no one had beaten Greg then.

"That was a long time ago. We're back and we want to do it again. We are so close to winning right now, it's scary. I'd just as soon start here. I really would. We keep inching up, making strides every race. We're ready, we're ready right now. I just hope we can win for Mopar, Don Schumacher Racing and all the guys at the shop. Everybody here contributes so much to this program, we need to win a race."

By qualifying No. 3, Morgan moved into fourth in the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series Pro Stock point standings, by one point over Dave Connolly, who qualified 11th.

Morgan will face Bruce Allen in the first round of final eliminations on Sunday, beginning at 11 a.m.
