SONOMA, Calif. (July 30, 2004) - Tommy Johnson Jr. drove his blue Skoal RacingSM Chevy Monte Carlo to a run of 4.990 seconds at 304.12 mph Friday at Infineon Raceway to place the Iowa native 13th in the Funny Car order.
The five-time NHRA winner raced to a run of 5.948 at 161.09 after losing traction on his first qualifying effort of the weekend. The blue crew then grabbed the No. 13 qualifying spot after using a Mike Green tune-up to record the 4.990 at 161.09 effort.
"The track wasn't as good as we expected on the first run," Johnson said. "We were a little conservative going into the second session and the track came around and we made a nice run. We'll tune it up on Saturday and shoot for a better number."
Johnson aims to move into the top half of the Funny Car order when qualifying resumes at noon and 3:30 p.m. (PT) on Saturday.
