Spencer Massey Advances To Semifinals In NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals

Piloting the FRAM/Prestone Top Fuel dragster, Spencer Massey lost in the semifinals of the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals here Sunday at Bristol Dragway.

Massey was beaten in a close race by defending world champion and eventual event winner Larry Dixon, despite banking an impressive 3.866-second pass at 320.20 miles per hour.

“It was a good race,” said the Fort Worth native and resident. “We knew we had to step it up against the Al-Anabi team. We tried to run a 3.82 or 3.83, but it just didn’t happen. That’s racing for you. It was still a great weekend for us.”

Massey arrived in Thunder Valley holding second in the 2011 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series Top Fuel standings and in the midst of a two-race winning streak. He appeared on his way to a third consecutive victory before falling to Dixon.

“That’s all right,” he said. “We kept our streak alive of getting down the race track clean. We’ve now gone from A to B without any issues 30 straight times. I’m extremely proud of my FRAM/Prestone team. They keep giving me one great race car.”

After qualifying third, Massey disposed of Pat Dakin in the opening round of eliminations before facing points leader Del Worsham in the quarterfinals. He was able to slide by Worsham with a 3.868-second run at 314.75 mph.

“That was a big round for us,” said Massey, who is now third in the standings. “When you can take out the guy leading the points you are accomplishing something. Obviously, it would have been real nice if we could have beaten his teammate (Dixon) as well.”

Massey will now turn his attention to the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals next weekend at Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio.

“I can’t wait to get up there,” related Massey. “Even though we lost in the semis today, I still believe we have momentum on our side. We’re going to take that right to Norwalk.”
