Madison, Ill. (June 24) - In eliminations today at the Fourth Annual Sears Craftsman Nationals in St. Louis. Mo., Brian "Lump" Self would pilot his Roof-Tec Chevrolet S-10 all the way to the semi-finals before falling to John Coughlin.

On his way to the semi-finals, Self would defeat Spitzer in Round 1 when he ran a 7.654 / 175.8 mph to Spitzer's 7.689 / 175.52 mph. In Round 2 Self ran a 7.640 / 176.17 mph to defeat Steve Johns 7.657 / 175.64 mph.=20

In the semi-finals Self would meet John Coughlin. Coughlin had lane choice and would place Self in the poorer right lane. Although, Self would have a better reaction time of .455 seconds, it would not be enough to hold off Coughlin. Coughlin would run a 7.596 / 176.45 mph to defeat Self's 7.637 / 176.19 mph.

"I had him on the tree," said Self, "but it was not enough to hold him off. I would have liked to have gone to the finals, but I am not unhappy. We are running good, going rounds and moving up in the points.

"This is the second race in a row that we have gone to the semi's. I am tickled about that. We know that it is just a matter of time before we get to the final.=20

"The fast guys have about three hundredths on us. I have a new cylinder head coming out that I think will fix that. We are hoping that we can get it done for Bristol. That way we are running right now I can't wait to get to Bristol. There are two spots still open in the Show Down and I think one of them has my name on it."

The next stop on the NHRA Drag Racing circuit is the Winston Show Down in Bristol, Tenn. July 7-9.=20
