Connolly Runs Quickest in Last Qualifying Session, Starts Third At St. Louis; Coughlin Few Ticks Behind in Fourth Place
MADISON, Ill./St. Louis, May 5, 2007 -- Bravo! Brands Inc. (OTC Bulletin Board: BRVO): Dave Connolly grabbed the qualifying spotlight on a warm, humid Saturday afternoon near St. Louis when he registered the quickest elapsed time in the second round of Pro Stock qualifying for Sunday's O'Reilly Midwest Nationals at Gateway International Raceway.
Connolly's 6.692-second, 205.91-mph performance in Evan Knoll's Torco Racing Fuels/Slammers Ultimate Milk Chevy Cobalt not only was his best, it was the only run under 6.70 seconds in the afternoon session. And it bodes well for eliminations where conditions are expected to remain warm.
Connolly finished third overall, followed by Cagnazzi Racing teammate Jeg Coughlin, who will start fourth. Coughlin's Slammers Ultimate Milk Chevy Cobalt was timed in 6.703 seconds.
Rain washed out Friday's qualifying, putting a premium on a good Saturday effort, and the team responded. Connolly's first run was 6.698 seconds at 205.66 mph, while Coughlin added a 6.751 in the second session.
"After all the rain we had and losing the first two runs, just getting in the show was pretty important," said Connolly. "We started the day running pretty strong, finishing third and fourth and then to come out in the heat of the day and make the quickest run of the session gives us a lot of confidence.
"We have a good race-day setup on our cars and we are looking forward to racing on Sunday.
Coughlin was happy the team got "good data off Dave's car," in the second run. "That was exciting. My car was a little lazy down low and I pulled it out of first gear a little bit early," Coughlin said of his second run. "That was a driver malfunction which hopefully only happens once a year and in sessions that don't count. Fortunately that was the case Saturday.
"We still have a lot of momentum going into first round. I think we are qualified extremely well and I think we are in for a good race."
Connolly's first-round opponent is Kenny Koretsky (No. 14, 6.738 at 205.26) and Coughlin races Mike Edwards (13th, 6.737 at 205.04).
