Herbert Aimed to Continue March toward Championship

MADISON, Ill. (April 29, 2008) Doug Herbert looks forward to returning to Gateway Int'l Raceway and he plans to reach winner's circle at this weekends 12th annual NHRA Midwest Nationals.

Herbert, owner and driver of the SnaponFranchise.com Top Fuel dragster, has been gaining ground on the NHRA POWERade championship since the launch of his 2008 "For My Boys Tour", and nothing puts you closer to a championship than winning a race.

"We went to the quarterfinal at the last race," said the veteran driver, "and that bumped us up to No. 8 in the overall point standings.

"That's great because we need to stay in the top ten to stay in the Countdown, but what we really want to do is win. When you are winning races the points take care of themselves."

One of Herbert's goals since the tragic passing of his sons, Jon, 17, and James, 12, in an automobile accident in January, has been to win the championship in their honor. The other goal has been to prevent other people from experiencing the pain he has felt since the accident.

With help from Jon's senior classmates at SouthLake Christian Academy, Herbert founded BRAKES -- Be Responsible and Keep Everyone Safe -- to educate teen drivers on responsible driving and how severe the consequences of not driving safely can be.

"I have been doing as much as I can to get the word out about BRAKES," said Herbert, "and going to so many different places around the country on the NHRA POWERade tour helps me get the word out.

"Jon and James have both been to St. Louis with me and we went up in the arch. I have some good memories here.

"My boys loved going to the race track with me, and I feel like they are watching over me when I am racing. I want to win for them, and I want to start this weekend."
