Warren Johnson and the GM Performance Parts GTO Racing team continued their string of strong performance, making two solid runs in capturing the seventh starting position for Sunday's final eliminations of the O'Reilly NHRA Midwest Nationals in Madison, IL. Although rain and a damp racetrack had curtailed qualifying to only two attempts on Saturday, Johnson and crew took it all in stride, opening with a 6.717 second, 205.98 mph pass to guarantee their spot in the field, followed by an equally competitive 6,729 second, 205.51 mph pass on their second attempt, putting them in good stead for race day.
"We made two runs, and either was good enough to qualify, which is all that counts. Our GM Performance Parts GTO was pretty good today. Even though we had a minor glitch on our second run, with an "O" ring coming out of the line lock prior, it still went down the track in competitive fashion. We've already fixed that, and now we're going through everything, making sure we have everything in order for tomorrow. We'll calculate what we should do, wait until morning to check the conditions, and make the necessary adjustments.
"It appears our decision to bring in additional personnel is achieving one part of our goal to bring some semblance of consistency to our program. With that aspect bearing some fruit, it's time to turn our attention on the other end of our program, which is making more steam. But for now, our attention is squarely focused on doing what is necessary to succeed in St. Louis."
