LAS VEGAS (October 31, 2003) -- At the NHRA ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals, Jim Oddy's Summit Racing Equipment-backed Pro Mod team solidified their place in drag racing history by winning the Drag Racing Online/Nowling Motorsports Management Cup points chase which determines a World Championship for the Pro Modifieds that compete on the 10-race NHRA AMS Staff Leasing Pro Mod Challenge series, an NHRA exhibition class.
The championship represented two major accomplishments for the Summit Racing Equipment team headed by owner and engine builder Jim Oddy and driver Fred Hahn. First, the two men, who have been a race team for 15 years, won their first NHRA AMS Staff Leasing Pro Mod Challenge series championship. Second, winning the DRO/NMM Cup made them the only team in drag racing history to have won a Pro Modified championship in every sanctioning body that the pair has competed.
The Elma, NY-based team got their first championship in 1991, winning the United Super Series Circuit over racers such as Bill Kuhlmann and Robbie Vandergriff. They won that title again in 1992 and 1994. In 1995 the team added a Super Chevy Series title as well as a United States Super Circuit Championship and repeated in 1996. In 1997 the team won the Super Chevy Nitro Coupe World Championship and in 2000 the IHRA World Championship. Winning the DRO/NMM Cup also makes the team only the second in history to win championships on both the NHRA and IHRA circuits.
And just to put a capper on the 2003 season, Fred Hahn drove the supercharged Corvette to a 6.11 elapsed time during the IHRA World Finals at Rockingham Dragway. He had previously turned in a 6.07 elapsed time at the NHRA AMS Staff Leasing event at Englishtown, NJ giving the team the two quickest legal Pro Mod passes in history. Hahn was the Car Craft All-Star Pro Modified Driver of the Year in both 2000 and 2002.
"It's been quite a season for us," said Oddy. "The first half of the season we really had things going our way and we built up a big points lead on the NHRA circuit. Then we went through the worst three races of my career when, no matter what we did, we couldn't get the car down the track - and, believe me, Fred and I tried every trick we knew. Thanks to my car chief and shop foreman, Billy Leverentz, we had a fresh motor and car every race, but those last three races were the worst this team's ever had.
"I never thought we could win the Championship, especially since we couldn't qualify at Las Vegas, but we had more luck than I ever thought possible and we won the Championship. I just want to stress that this Championship was the result of a total team effort. Everybody on this team, including my sons Dan and Dave, Mike Bartolotto, Joel Coon, Charlene Kirsch, and Billy made this deal possible."
Oddy added, "I also want to stress that without our major sponsorship of Summit Racing Equipment and our long time associates Isky Racing Cams, Blower Drive Service, Red Line Oil, Hoosier Tires and MSD we simply couldn't have done this."
