Team JEG'S Looks For More Success In Houston
Troy Coughlin and his #24 JEG'S Mail Order Olds Cutlass currently hold down the number two position in the '99 NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series. Troy started the season by being the runner-up in the first two races and had a semifinal appearance at the most recent race, the MacTools Gatornationals. "This season our team has shown that all of our hard work and dedication during the off season is really paying off. Richard Maskin and his staff at DART Machinery have been busy working on performance advancements," noted Coughlin. "Houston has the potential to have great conditions for the Pro Stock class. I would like nothing more than to enter the Federal-Mogul Speed Pro 200-mph Club as the fifth member of this elite group and leave with my first Pro Stock win." The 35 points that separate Troy from the number one spot is an opportunity at the O'Reilly Nationals presented by Pennzoil.
With a win, semifinal round appearance and a second round defeat, to his brother, under his belt so far in the '99 NHRA season Jeg Coughlin, Jr is hungry for another win. "Houston Raceway Park has and always will have a special feeling to me," said Jeg. In 1997, Jeg won his first NHRA Pro Stock event at the Matco Tools Super Nationals in only his second race behind the wheel of a "factory hot rod". Out of the three times that Jeg has competed in Pro Stock at Houston Raceway Park he has won both Matco Tools Super Nationals ('97 & '98) and last year posted a semifinal round defeat. Jeg said, "if history is any indication of what our team has to look forward to when we get to Houston; I can't wait!" Jeg currently rest in the number four position in the '99 NHRA Winston points chase with 242 points, he is 49 points behind series leader Kurt Johnson.
The JEG'S Mail Order Racing Pro Stock Truck program is making positive steps forward with each pass down the track. Mike Coughlin is in the number ten spot in the '99 NHRA Winston points. "I am looking forward to coming to Houston. The entire team has spent a lot of time and energy preparing for this race," says Coughlin. "My brother Jeg won his first NHRA professional race at this track and that is a tradition I would love to keep going!" Mike is 109 points from the top spot of the Pro Stock Truck class. However, the points chase between Craig Eaton (105), Tim Freeman (91), John Lingenfelter (86) and Mike is very tight. A strong finish at the O'Reilly Nationals will certainly redefine the top ten of this extremely competitive class.
Pro Stock Truck "rookie" John Coughlin has been showing that his driving improves with each time he gets behind the wheel of his #31 JEG'S Mail Order S-10. After a disappointing DNQ at the season opener. John rebounded with qualifying in the number eleven position for the MacTools Gatornationals John said, "The team and I are really looking forward to Houston. We tested at Gainesville Raceway on Monday following the MacTools Gatornationals and made some real progress." The team's commitment to success is seen in every part of the organization. "Richard and his staff have completed a new engine for me which has a significant increase in horsepower," commented the oldest Coughlin brother, John. The yellow and black JEG'S S-10 driven by John resides currently in the number fifteen position in the points battle with 42 points. John is 43 points from the number ten spot, where his brother Mike's #28 JEG'S Mail Order machine is resting.
