The 50-year history of the National Hot Rod Association in words, photos, and statistics; Top 50 Drivers to be named From its humble, grassroots beginning in 1951 to its powerhouse status in 2001, the National Hot Rod Association has a history rich in tradition, innovation, and performance, populated by the bravest drivers and most talented mechanics in all of motorsports. To commemorate NHRA's 50th Anniversary, NHRA.com, the official website of the NHRA, has produced a wide-ranging 50th Anniversary section of its popular web site. By the end of 2001, the site will contain more than 500 original and reproduced articles from the history of motorsports' largest sanctioning body. Within the special 50th Anniversary section, visitors can relive incredible achievements, memorable moments, and some of the NHRA's greatest events throughout five decades of quarter-mile competition. An exhaustive year-by-year feature, highlighting the top stories of each of NHRA's 50 years, is highlighted by a detailed look at NHRA's formative years. NHRA.com also convened a panel of drag racing experts and laid before them the challenge of selecting NHRA's Top 50 Greatest Drivers. The votes have now been tabulated, and the drivers will be unveiled, in reverse order, beginning Feb. 4, the final day of the 2001 season-opening AutoZone Winternationals until Nov. 11, the final day of the 2001 season-ending Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals. Another ongoing feature of NHRA's 50th Anniversary salute of NHRA.com will be a look back at memorable NHRA national events of the last five decades. A comprehensive list of the winners and runners-up of every NHRA national event from 1955 through 2000 (more than 450). There's also special 50th Anniversary photo gallery of both historic, black and white and contemporary color images for the enjoyment of its visitors or for use as computer wallpaper. NHRA was an internet pioneer among auto-racing sanctioning bodies, launching the first version of its website in July 1995. The current NHRA.com site serves nearly 20 million page views each month to its information-hungry visitors. NHRA's 50th Anniversary site may be accessed by clicking on the 50th Anniversary logo on the NHRA.com home page, or directly at www.nhra.com/50th/index.html.

As NHRA celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2001, it has emerged as one of the most popular spectator sports, highlighted by a $50 million, 24-event, nationally televised tour. The NHRA has developed into the world's largest motorsports sanctioning body, with more than 80,000 members nationwide, and more than 140 member tracks.
