LATE SEASON SPURT PUTS McCLENATHAN BACK IN TOP FUEL TITLE HUNT

Cory McClenathan, driver of the Joe Gibbs-owned MBNA Top Fuel dragster, is still enjoying the high he felt after winning the prestigious U.S. Nationals at Indianapolis Raceway Park. The victory, his second of the season, put his team back into contention for the 1999 NHRA Winston Top Fuel championship. He's currently seventh overall in the standings, 126 points behind leader Tony Schumacher. McClenathan, from Anaheim, Calif., is the defending winner of the Advance Auto Parts NHRA Nationals. He also won this event at Heartland Park Topeka in 1994, and was a runner-up there in 1993.

CAPPS WORKING HIS WAY OUT OF SLUMP IN FUNNY CAR COMPETITION

Ron Capps, driver of the Don Prudhomme-owned Copenhagen Chevrolet Camaro, is the defending Funny Car champion at Heartland Park Topeka. Capps last claimed an NHRA national event victory here one year ago when he defeated Al Hofmann in the rain-delayed final. The San Diego driver has struggled most of the season and sits 10th in the NHRA Winston point standings. He had his best outing of the year at the recent NHRA national event at Maple Grove Raceway in Reading, Pa., where he finished runner-up to Tommy Johnson Jr. The other highlight of his season took place two weeks earlier, when he won the $100,000 Big Bud Shootout at Indianapolis. Capps hopes the team finds a way to carry this late season surge of momentum on into the final five events. His goal for '99: a top five finish in the Winston point standings.
