Back to basics for Jerry Haas
Topeka, Kan., - - Jerry Haas, from Fenton, Mo., will return to basics and a one truck operation when the first session of professional qualifying gets underway Friday at the Advance Auto Parts Nationals at Heartland Park in Topeka, Kan. Matt Rhoades, from Lake Havasu City, Ariz., will be at the helm of the Haas-owned, Haas-prepared Chevy S-10.
"To say that I have not been happy with the results that we have shown thus far in the season would be an understatement," said Haas. "I know that this Chevy S-10 is capable of qualifying in the top half of the field, but we have failed to get the full performance potential from our truck through the first five races. Therefore, for the next several races we will return to basics with just one truck and concentrate on consistency and returning to the performance levels of past seasons.
"We have a proven power plant from Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins and the best equipment and parts available. It will now be up to Jimmy Gunther, Bob Shawcross, Matt Rhoades and myself to bring this team up to a level of performance that will allow us to qualify well and go rounds during eliminations.
Rhoades qualified for his first professional NHRA national event at the SummitRacing.com Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in April. He is currently 23rd in the NHRA Winston point standings, having run a career best elapsed time of 7.522 seconds and career best speed of 179.40 mph at the Mac Tools Gatornationals in March.
"Since coming on board this season, Matt has improved with each race. He is now more relaxed in the driver's seat, hitting his shift points and doing an overall good job of getting the truck down the quarter-mile," added Haas. "The Topeka track has been recently resurfaced. We will first establish a baseline, then work on getting the most performance that the track will allow. As I said, 'It's back to basics.'"
There will be two sessions of professional qualifying on Friday and another two on Saturday. The quickest 16 drivers will then compete head-to-head when final eliminations commence on Sunday.
