The Dixon Dispatch
The Weekly News Release of Larry Dixon & the Miller Lite Dragster
Larry Dixon enjoys best Top Fuel start in NHRA history reaching 7 final rounds in 8 races on 2002 NHRA PowerAde drag racing tour.
Topeka, KS (May 21) - NHRA POWERade point leader Larry Dixon has Don Prudhomme's Snake Racing Miller Lite Dragster off to the best start in the history of Top Fuel, having reached the final round at seven out of the first eight races of the 2002 season. With Houston as the only blemish on his record this year, Dixon quickly established the lead in the point chase and owns a 143-marker advantage coming into this weekend's 14th Annual O'Reilly Summer Nationals presented by Castrol Syntec (May 23-26) at Heartland Park Topeka.
It is that kind of momentum that may provide the fuel Dixon needs to earn his first career victory in Kansas. Prior to last season's runner-up finish, the Miller Lite pilot had not advanced past the second round in his first nine attempts. Given the way crew chief Dick LaHaie has Dixon's car running this season, along with a resume that includes both one win and a runner up finish as a driver to complement tuning both Scott Kalitta and Doug Herbert to wins at HPT, it may be Miller Time in the winner's circle come Sunday.
"I go in there looking at our past success, or mostly Dick LaHaie's past success at Topeka," said Dixon. "He has won himself driving a bunch there and he has tuned quite a few cars that have won races there, so I'm looking forward to trying to get a win with my name on the trophy in a car that he has tuned. I think that LaHaie certainly has a good understanding for that race track and that facility."
Never one to lose sight of the bigger picture, Dixon also realizes the importance of trying to not only take advantage of the momentum the Miller Team has already achieved, but how vital it is not to lose it during a busy stretch in the NHRA schedule. "With three races in three weeks, I look at it as trying to score more points than anybody when you have this many races in a row like we do," said Dixon. "We are down 19 to Kenny (after the first race) and we have got two races left, eight rounds of racing. When you have a good-running hot rod, or a bad-running hot rod, you don't have time to do anything really about it," said Dixon. "You can either get in the hole quick or make strides quick when you have races back-to-back-to-back. You don't have time to test to fix your car if it's not running well, so while our car is running good I am looking forward to running three in a row like this."
