STRONG-MINDED LUCAS RACING HIS WAY BACK INTO CHAMPIONSHIP CONTENTION
21-Year Old driver Holds Third Position in Top Fuel Standings
TOPEKA (May 24) -- With one-third of his first full NHRA POWERade season underneath his belt, Top Fuel rising star, Morgan Lucas finds himself third in the Top Fuel point standings with 502 points and wants to regain his status near the top of the roster that he attained in the early part of the year. He's now 182 points out of the lead, but with 15 races remaining on the schedule heading into the O'Reilly Summer Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka this Memorial Day weekend, he's handling the situation like a veteran and is ready to earn his way back into contention.
"Right now, we need to buckle down and start catching the guys up front," said Lucas, who has recorded four semi-final finishes in the first eight races of 2005. "Of course, the simplest way for that to happen is for Doug Kalitta and Tony Schumacher to have some early round losses. That's the sure way we could capitalize on it and make up the rounds we need. It would appear they were marching away from us in the first part of the season, but we need to start gaining ground on them starting in Topeka. With the hot races coming up, where we hope we're going to shine, this weekend is especially important."
Crew chief, Wayne Dupuy has mastered the hot, slick race conditions in the past as his driver noticed very quickly in a recent test and the successful debut of a new Hadman chassis in Atlanta proves his Lucas Oil dragster can get a grip where most cars cannot. That is something he's looking forward to with the summer season just getting started.
"Our car has been running good and we've won our fair share of rounds and are third in points," said Lucas, who grabbed his first Bud Pole at that same Atlanta race. "There are some times where you're in a situation you can't control and we need to do our best and get through those times. You have to win the race. If you don't, then you left something on the table."
Qualifying for the O'Reilly Summer Nationals starts on Friday, May 27 with sessions at 5 and 8 p.m. Saturday's sessions are on the schedule to run at 12:30 and 3:30 p.m. with Sunday's eliminations starting at 11 a.m., Sunday, May 29.
