LARRY DIXON & MILLER LITE DRAGSTER QUALIFY NO. 11 FOR SUNDAY'S ELIMINATION ROUND AT HEARTLAND TOPEKA PARK
WORLD'S QUICKEST DRAGSTER TO MEET KENNY BERNSTEIN IN FIRST ROUND
TOPEKA, KS. (Oct. 2) - Larry Dixon and the Don Prudhomme-owned Miller Lite Dragster used their best provisional lap of 4.691 seconds at 297.88 m.p.h. recorded on Friday to qualify No. 11 and will meet No. 6 Kenny Bernstein in the first round of eliminations Sunday at the 11th Annual Advance Auto Parts Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka.
The first-round match up between Dixon (No. 8 - 946) and Bernstein (No. 5 - 996) will play a significant role in the highly competitive NHRA Winston Top Fuel Standings. For the season, Dixon owns a mark of 3 - 1 against Bernstein and is 4 - 8 for his career.
Miller Lite Team crew chief Dick LaHaie feels confident that his crew will be ready for the challenge. "We have to make a few adjustment to the car which I think are necessary when you are hunting for a combination," said LaHaie, "but I am confident that once we correct a couple of things, we will be fine. I think we have the car pointed in the right direction and we will be ready to race the thing. We are going to take it up to race tomorrow and if it does what it is supposed to, we will be in good shape."
Dixon entered this morning's round as the No. 9 qualifier and was scheduled to run in the first pair of top fuelers after shutting off early in Friday night's session. After electing to sit out of the day's first qualifying pass, Dixon returned to the cockpit for his final run.
"We didn't want to go out there and make a pass on a cold track with no rubber on it," said Dixon. "Because we were solidly in the field, we didn't want to go out and help anybody else out by improving the track for them. We will be back this afternoon looking to improve our position and get ready for Sunday."
The Snake Racing Team's strategy paid off as Dixon remained the No. 9 qualifier heading into the final qualifying lap. The former NHRA Rookie of the Year proved ready for the task of climbing the ladder as he cut his best light of the weekend (.489), however he would not be able to improve on Friday's elapsed time. - Snake Racing -
