Troy Coughlin returns to Super Gas for home event

DELAWARE, Ohio -- After spending the last two years, racing in the AMS Pro Mod Series and the NMCA Pro Street division, Troy Coughlin will return to his roots as he takes the wheel of his Jeg's Mail Order Super Gas Corvette for this weekend's Pontiac Performance Nationals at, National Trail Raceway. One of four Coughlin brothers who have combined to win more than 100 major drag racing events, Troy will be seeking his first NHRA national event victory since the 2002 Topeka race, where he won the Pro Stock title.

"Due to my hectic scheduled, I haven't raced much in Super Gas for the past few years, but I still really enjoy it," said Coughlin. "Our Corvette is like a family heirloom; I think all of my brothers have driven it at least once and it's a good, consistent race car."

Last week, Coughlin cleaned the cobwebs out of his Corvette, and headed to National Trail Raceway to make a few test runs. After some minor tuning adjustments, he was able to get the car to run within a couple hundredths of the 9.90 Super Gas index.

"I haven't driven the car since last August, but it still fits like an old shoe," said Coughlin. "Being able to test the car was really helpful and my take is that any seat time is better than none. Super Gas might not be the fastest class NHRA has, but it certainly is one of the most competitive. You've really got to be on top of your game in order to have a chance of winning."

Though he long ago moved on to faster vehicles, Coughlin is no stranger to success in the Super Gas class. He earned his first career national event victory in Super Gas at the 1991 NHRA U.S. Nationals and also won a Lucas Oil Series divisional event at Indianapolis Raceway Park in 1993.

Coughlin will be joined in Columbus by his brothers, John, Mike, and Jeg, who will each be racing in at least one sportsman eliminator.
