A Special Invitation
Milford, Michigan -- The VIPsports.com Dodge Stratus NHRA Top Alcohol Funny Car had a tough weekend at Cleves, Ohio, but left Edgewater Sports Park with an invitation to compete in the exclusive Jeg's Allstars "race within a race" season finale.
The August 5th -- 7th NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Division 3 race was contested under trying conditions. Qualifying for the top alcohol classes was rained out completely on Friday. Saturday was marginally better in that only one alcohol qualifying session wasn't rained out. With just one pass in which to qualify and determine a race set-up, the ParkerTech Racing Services crew dove deep into their data banks to give driver Danny Townsend a good ride. Townsend took advantage of their work and turned a 6.042, 245.09 mph lap for the number four qualifying spot.
The first elimination round, on Sunday, had Townsend and his VIPsports.com Stratus up against the Dodge Avenger of Bobby Martin. Showing no favoritism to a fellow Dodge competitor, Townsend put Martin away and started concentrating on the semi-finals. But the track that had been good to the team turned against them. The track fought off Townsend's considerable skills and refused to allow the VIPsports.com Dodge Stratus a smooth run. With the track concentrating on Townsend, Mick Snyder, in the other lane, snuck by for the win.
Although Snyder won the race, and held on to his Division 3 TAFC points lead, the VIPsports.com team nicked him for the Jeg's Allstars special invitation by just one point. The 21st Annual Jeg's Allstars "race within a race" will take place at the Ameriquest Mortgage NHRA Nationals, at Rt. 66 Raceway, September 29th -- October 2nd and will be televised on ESPN2. The weekend's racing also changed the team's tenth-place national points standing into a two-way tie for ninth.
Coming up next, for the VIPsports.com Dodge Avenger, is a feature appearance at the 11th Annual Woodward Avenue Dream Cruise, on Saturday, August 20th. Look for the team in the Dodge display on the southwest corner of Woodward Avenue and 13 Mile Road. Current plans are to start the car at least twice, during the day. A top alcohol fire-up is hard to miss, even a few blocks away. Stay tuned for additional news on cruise activities.
