Wells division 5 Douglas wrap up

DOUGLAS, Wyo - Defending Division 5 Federal Mogul Dragster Champion David Wells drove his Blue Bunny Ice Cream/ "Plain Vanilla" dragster to a runner up finish at the fourth NHRA Division 5 Federal Mogul Drag Racing Series race at Douglas International Raceway in Douglas, Wyoming. Wells was defeated by current points leader Billy Bybee in the final by a 5.888/241.89 over his own 5.973/238.17.

Wells qualified No. 2 with a 5.998/234.53, then defeated Bret DuCray with a 5.988/236.75 in the first round, and Bruce Bowler with a 6.013/236.46 in the semifinals.

"I cut a good holeshot on him, but he just came around me on the big end," Wells said. "He [Bybee] was about a tenth [of a second] ahead of us all weekend, and we just couldn't find that tenth."

"I still think I can catch up with him in points, we just got to step it up a notch."

The next stop for the Blue Bunny Ice Cream/ "Plain Vanilla" team will be at the Mopar Mile High Nationals at Bandimere Speedway near Denver, Colorado. Wells qualified No. 1 there just a few weeks earlier at the Division 5 points meet with a 5.73, and will be one of the favorites to win.

"We feel confident about our chances in Denver after the way we ran there at the Division 5 race."
