AKRON, Ohio Goodyear's Wrangler MT/R remains the tire to beat in CORR.

Jim Alexander, marketing manager for off-road racing, said Goodyear's CORR tire is destined to be the company's best ever.

"The Wrangler MT/R tire raises the standard for tire durability in off-road racing and rock crawling," Alexander said.

Goodyear engineers were recognized this year for their work on the Wrangler tire. A Northeast Ohio organization presented the company with its 2001 NorTech Innovation Award for using creative concepts to serve customers.

The award pointed to Wrangler MT/R's Durawall technology in its puncture-resistant sidewalls. The breakthrough Durawall construction contains a high-tech silica sidewall compound, three polyester plies and tread elements that extend down the sidewall.

"The threat of flat tires in off-road racing and rock crawling is greatly diminished, thanks to this patented technology," Alexander said. "The Wrangler MT/R keeps our drivers in the race."

Off-road racing is the toughest test bed for light-truck tires. Asymmetric, directional treads, reinforced sidewalls, durable inner constructions and rock-tough tread polymers have roots sown in racing, Alexander said.

"CORR racing is the best test of Wrangler endurance and reliability. Our engineers work directly with drivers to determine what it takes to win. That experience, under race conditions, translates directly to what we sell to consumers who visit our retailers," he said.

Goodyear Wrangler MT/R already has passed the test with wins in CORR and in the Goodyear/Skyjacker Extreme Rock Crawling Nationals.

The race-tough tire is gaining attention among CORR drivers as well as on tire store shelves.

"It's aggressive stance on dirt and rocks sets it apart from the competition. The tire is grabbing market share in the important off-road tire segment," he added.

Alexander said Wrangler MT/R's CORR performance translates well into its traction and brute strength on the street. "We've always relied on our racing experience and technology to find its way into our street tires."

"That technology transfer is more understandable to CORR fans, because the street tires bear a striking resemblance to the original race tires. That's no accident."

"Tire buyers and CORR drivers stand to benefit from Goodyear's broad racing experience. By listening to the off-road racer, we know what they want and need. For the fans, the Wranglers they buy at retailers were developed from what we learned in racing off road. In each case, everyone wins."
