An American Abroad--Joe D'Agostino prepares for return to UK Formula Ford

(22 June 05)--After spending two weeks on home soil in Florida working the phones in the hunt for sponsorship to help him move up to F3 next season, American Joe D'Agostino is preparing to return to England this week to resume his battle for the prestigious UK Formula Ford Championship.

Racing with Team JLR, the same team that Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon raced with before moving Stateside, D'Agostino has scored an impressive six wins from ten races thus far in the championship.

D'Agostino, who has been on the podium nine times and shown that he has great speed, is looking to follow in the footsteps of drivers like Nigel Mansell, Emmerson Fittipaldi, and Ayrton Senna, who all raced in Formula Ford before moving up to the pinnacle of motorsport in Formula 1.

But the battle isn't just on the track for the young American, as he is still working to insure that he has the budget to finish the season.

"It's very difficult, but everyone has been so fantastic about the situation, offering to help in many different ways," said D'Agostino. "Before I got the job with the team driving the car, I told the team owner, Richard Dean, I would sleep on the shop floor if I had to. Now, I am driving the car, and Richard is a good friend and mentor, and has even been kind enough to let me stay at his place."

Living far from home and living close to the bone hasn't put a dent in his determination to make it happen.

"I don't care at all that I am sleeping on someone's couch, or that I have to take the bus to some of the races," says D'Agostino. "I am getting the chance to race and show my talent, and hopefully someone will see that and help me move my career forward. I have been lucky so far that people like Mockett.com, Sutton Images, and Arai Helmets have helped me get this far, and their support gives me even more motivation to continue winning and try to move up."

Despite the win tally, D'Agostino is second in the championship points after a disastrous second round, which saw him fail to finish after another car hit his.

"The points spread between winning and coming in second place is slim, and I only make up so many points on the leader, so I have to just keep winning to get back on top of the championship."

D'Agostino will race next weekend, June 25-26, for rounds 11 and 12 of the UK Formula Ford Championship at Castle Combe. The Formula Ford Festival is scheduled for October 21-23.
