Mortlock sets the record straight but it's not enough to secure victory!

Brands Hatch, UK, Saturday 18th May 2002: In front of a bumper crowd at this festival of racing, Klaas Zwart, driving a Team Ascari V10 Benetton Judd, won an enthralling race, starting from second on the grid. From the moment he took the lead with a brilliant manoeuvre into Druids on the first lap it was clear that this would be no ordinary race - and so it proved as lap after lap Zwart and Mortlock, driving a 1992 Footwork Judd V10, battled for the lead.

By lap six, as they began to lap the backmarkers, Mortlock was held up enabling Zwart to gain valuable seconds and Championship leader Phil Andrews, lying in third place, moved into contention. Mortlock however was not finished and was soon back on the tail of Zwart. Despite breaking the lap record three times during the race, Mortlock's fastest time being 39.400secs, he could not find a way through and his challenge was effectively ended on lap 13 in an attempted manoeuvre at Graham Hill Bend. As the leading two converged on backmarker Hansford in a Eurobrun, Mortlock was forced to run wide losing second place to Andrews.

Hansford was involved from the start in his own tussle for the NDS EuroBOSS masters championship, battling with Colin Stone in the RAM and ensuring that the battle was not confined to the front of the field. Stone eventually triumphed, topping the NDS EuroBOSS Masters class ahead of Hansford. In NDS EuroBOSS 3000 Roger Kilty finished top of his class - 8th overall.

Klaas Zwart, Driver, Team Ascari:
"The car was fantastic and this was a hard fought win. I am pleased for the team and the Series, this was an action packed race and great entertainment for the large crowd. It was a very good advert for NDS EuroBOSS, I hope tomorrow's Championship race is just as exciting, with a similar result."

Phil Andrews, Driver, Team Ascari:
"Although I had a problem changing from fifth to sixth the car ran very well. This result puts me on the front row and in contention for tomorrow's race."

Matthew Mortlock, Driver, F1.Sales.com:
"It was one of the best battles for the lead that I have ever had in EuroBOSS and when it commenced I really believed I was battling with Phil and not the old man! I looked at passing on numerous occasions, but Klaas blocked me very successfully which prevented me from using my greater speed to take the lead."

Race Result

The result decides grid positions for tomorrow's Championship round but does not carry Championship points.
