Maidstone-based Australian Brett Francis moved one step closer towards a second consecutive Kent Formula Ford Championship crown today by winning the tenth round of the series at Brands Hatch. The PA Motorsport driver faced some tough competition around the famous Indy Circuit, but held off FF1600 championship rival Chris Pennington to secure his seventh win of the season. It was a strong return to form after a disappointing result at Lydden three weeks ago when Francis was classified fourth after an incident filled race. He now leads the series overall from team-mate and Zetec driver David Hardisty.

Qualifying was conducted in slippery and overcast conditions, and some quick work by the PA Motorsport team on the set-up of Francis' 1993 Swift seconds before the start of the session enabled him to take Pole Position for the seventh time this year. At the green lights Francis established a lead of half a second at the end of the first lap that forced the competition to pull-out all the stops in an attempt to keep up. The Aussie maintained a comfortable lead until a mid-race Caution Period saw the field bunched up again as an incident was cleared from the track. At the restart, again Francis pulled clear and drove on to his seventh win from eight starts this year.

It was a happy and relieved Antipodean on the podium after the race, as he spoke to the commentator about his drive: "It's great to be back in front again after the Lydden round. Chris kept me honest throughout the race, and although he wasn't close enough to mount a challenge, I couldn't afford to make a mistake to give him the chance. (Team boss) Peter Alexander and I will have a think about some changes to make to the car before the next round to find some more speed, just in case our competitors find a little bit more as well." Francis spoke about his chances for winning the Kent Championship for a second time: "With four races to go, and the points being as close as they are, it's far too early to think about winning the title. At the beginning of the year we sat down with our sponsors Oasis and decided that after taking the title last year, our goal for this year had to be winning as many races as possible. And that's all I'm focussed on. PA Motorsport are going to start getting the Zetec cars ready for the Festival in a few months time, so I'll also start to put some attention towards that. But I won't turn my back on winning Kent Championship races."

The next round of the Kent Formula Ford Championship is on the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit on 9th September.
