Kelly Creates New Win Record

After recording his twelfth win from fifteen races, eighteen-year-old Rick Kelly has become the most victorious driver in a single Formula Holden season. Kelly led the all the way to claim honours during the first of two races at Winton today and surpassed Simon Will's season win tally of eleven season wins in the process. Kelly's team mates Paul Stokell and Brenton Ramsay made it a Birrana Racing trifecta by claiming second and third respectively after an entertaining 15 lap event. Stokell recorded the race's fastest lap and chased Kelly hard in a car that was very evenly matched and looks poised to threaten in this afternoon's second event.

Behind Ramsay in fourth was Christian Murchison who charged through from ninth on the grid and survived a thrilling mid-field dice with Akihiro Asai, Tim Leahey and Ramsay. Asai finished in ninth spot after breaking his front wing when he nosed into the stationary car of Leahey after Leahey spun from fourth spot mid-race. A sore and stiff Alan Gurr came home fifth after yesterday's heavy shunt which was more than his team mate Chris Staff could manage, Staff being punted off at Turn One on the opening lap after a spate of wheel-banging with Gurr and Asai.

Emerson Newton-John was one of a number of drivers to experience a spin, but after a huge battle with Terry Clearihan came home seventh behind Peter Hill, who also had a quick spin on his way to sixth. The Silver Star Championship battle between Terry Clearihan and Ian Peters is still alive with just one race remaining and Peters holding a seven point lead entering this year's final race. <pre> Race 1 Results
